Why Independent Kids?

Independent Kids is a home-based program that focuses on teaching discrete skills (following directions, completing multiple-step tasks, using visual organizers) as well as daily living skills through routine. Using the child’s natural environment, we use a teaching method that focuses on teaching specific skills in a structured environment (i.e. “table top” or desk activities). As the child masters these skills, the objective of the program evolves into applying these previously learned skills in the home. For example, a child may practice a task in which they need to sequence events through a structured picture sequencing task. This task will be built upon and adjusted so that this child will learn to be the most successful according to their age and level of functioning. As the child progresses through the program, this specific skill will be generalized to a relevant activity of daily living. So, if the child has been taught sequencing through table top activities, this knowledge will be utilized to practice sequencing skills by sequencing steps of a daily routine (i.e. getting dressed, morning routine, brushing teeth, etc.)

What To Expect The First Session

Following the scheduled phone consultation which will entail a thorough discussion about your child’s strengths and challenges, an initial session will be conducted for further assessment and rapport building between the child and the therapist. The child’s level of functioning will be assessed through parent-interview, questionnaires, checklists, observation and, possibly, standardized assessment results.

Following this evaluation process, quantitative and qualitative goals and objectives will be discussed with the therapist and family. In addition, appropriate supports, work space, caregiver roles, and carryover activities will be discussed. A program will then be written, discussed the caregiver, and then implemented. This program will revolve around the wants and needs of the family as a whole.

Is My Child Appropriate for Independent Kids?

Do you experience any of the following challenges with your child throughout their daily life?

  • Does your child have a hard time completing daily tasks such as getting dressed, getting ready for school, cleaning up toys, etc.?

  • Do you feel like you are frequently running late because you have challenges getting your children out the door?

  • Do you feel as though your children may be “scattered”?

  • Does your child frequently forget or lose their personal items?

  • Do you feel that you need to constantly assist your child with tasks without them learning how to complete that task on their own?

Independent Kids may help your children become more self-reliant, focused, and present in daily tasks.
